Those Horses are White

March 3rd, 2008 at 09:59 PM in A Thought, Rants, School

I’ve mentioned before the incredibly racist nature of my former middle school. It’s a pretty gangsta school, and everyone really is separated by race, however sometimes unconsciously.

High school is different.

Let’s say that the school I went to before is the Eagles. The Eagles, not the band. And our rival middle school is the Horses.

Say, high school is the mixing pot that pours us in, and we meet new people, knowing that by senior year, all couples will be a mixed Eagles/Horses.

Now, I’ve also always thought that Disney portrays school groupings very unrealistically. Especially the fact that there are no Asians (excluding Brenda Song) nor are there any Latinos (also excluding those chicks that make a one liner in a heavy Spanish accent). But they show the cheerleaders, the jocks, nerds, the goths, and the preps.

When I met the people who were Horses, I was very surprised. They closely matched the Disney standards, except in different races, because California is very diverse that way.

But they all acted the same. Our school had wannabe-FOBs and people who really loved their own culture.

The Horses were all White. The Chinese didn’t know much Chinese, the girls all fretted about boyfriends, and there hasn’t really been a wannabe-FOB like the ones that our Eagles had. Heck, the only students that matched ours were the Mexicans and Blacks who were closely associated (gangsta-ly) anyway. Well, the Mexican and Black girls are pretty White as well.

Not to be a complete asshole with the racial discriminations in my observations, but it’s how the students in my school are like.

Also, the high school that the Horses and Eagles are mixed in resembles that of my side, the Eagles. Everyone’s racially divided again, and my friend remarked that it must be different for the Horses to adjust, because they keep in their tightly “mixed” groups (as in a very “American” Chinese, few Whites, a Black, and a Hispanic, together), while the school keeps separating and separating.

The demographics of the two schools are about the same, but the people within are so drastically different.

I admire the Horses for their complete and honest diversity, but it’s not going to last.

Interesting observations. I can’t say I really understand it, since it’s not the same for my school, which is mixed and fine with it. Though now that I think about it, there’s a definite boundary between African Americans, the Latinos, and everyone else. (You see, the school is 42% Asian. Of course, it’s also in the bay area and again, it’s called AMERICAN High, so what else is there to say?

Disclaimer: Vii’s sense of acute observation is not very acute and thus sees the world through rose colored lenses. Do ignore.

I was going to go to American High last Tuesday for my club (Quiz Bowl) for a tournament, but I had to do this band concert thing. If it’s the same school I was going to go to and the same school you go to. Err. So close? Our high schools?

I don’t know of any other American High in the state (or the country, come to think of it) so possibly. But yeah, we have a quizbowl team and so very likely, it’s that close. O.o

What’s your high school?

San Leandro High. I’m pretty sure the one we were going to is in Fremont.
