Racial Tension?

December 9th, 2006 at 08:22 PM in A Thought, Out and About, School

Lately, at my school, everyone’s been buzzing about ‘racial tension’ and how this is not acceptable.  Because of a fight of somewhat about two weeks ago.  And apparently, one side of the max fight was of Asians and the other was of… African-Americans and Mexicans.

Though, really, it’s always been divided.  Naturally.  I was once on a field trip.  To a restaurant.  And we had a tour around, and they told us how things worked and what-not.  And we all sat down at a table for lunch.  And half-way through eating, we all noticed: one side was all girls, and one side was all boys.  No one noticed at all at the beginning.  It seemed to be automatic.

Now, it’s kind of the same.  Except with races, and not genders, because of couples and et cetera.  My friend made a map of our school cafeteria, and though Disney claims in its shows and original movies that the cafeteria is divided for jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, fashion ‘zombies,’ math-letes, goths, punks, or something like that; it’s more like:

  • Smart Asians (composed of Chinese kids, mostly).
  • Popular Asians girls (composed of Filipino girls, mostly.  And ‘white-washed’ Chinese, kind of).
  • Popular Asian guys (who are dumb).
  • Mexicans
  • African-Americans
  • Popular Caucasian guys
  • Popular Caucasian girls
  • Popular Hispanics.

And there are some different tables outside who are the emos and the punks.  And maybe athletes or so.

It happens with adults, too.

Yesterday was the annual Christmas party that my mom’s company throws every year.  Yes, it was early for Christmas.  I had a blog entry about it last year, too.

I noticed that with these five tables, there was two Asian tables, two caucasion tables, and one Mexican table.   There was one Caucasian in an Asian table, but he was the boyfriend of an Asian.  And in one Caucasian table, there were two Mexicans.

I think that it will always be very divided.  I have no idea why, but it just is.

Yes, that’s true, especially in a place with many people. There tends to be fewer of these problems in smaller places where there are less races. It’s just that people feel more comfortable around people who are similar to them.

I think that Disney does things the way it does so that it doesn’t get sued for promoting racism. Its image is closer to what a cafeteria would be like in a small school.

Yep, I’ve been saying that to my friends for a long time. There is one table that I sit at that people call the “Outlander” table. I usually mix up my tables every so often. Anyway, at the “outlander” table, there are like 3 african-americans, 5 chinese guys, 2 filipino guys, 3 mexican guys, and the rest are caucasian. No girls sit at the table though (the guys are pretty disgusting).

I don’t blame disney for what they’ve done. It’s what the movie buyers and cable owners want. I have nothing against disney; I actually like some of their movies (High School Musical not included) and tv shows.

I have a couple of ideas why the people in this world are turning this way, but you’ll have to ask me later for that. I’ll just say we’re coming close to the “Last Days”.

LATER!

I’ve always thought it dumb to discriminate people based on their ethnicity… but then I remembered the way I feel about gypsies. In my defense, I got ‘burned’.

Basically this rather looks like my first elementary school seating. You could practically draw a line through the middle of the classroom separating boys from girls :P The teacher then decided to do “forced seating”… maybe someone should do that in real life too. Then we’d learn.

Anyway, have a Merry Christmas. :D

Oh, boy…I remember that day. Crazy. But I don’t know, in a sense, I felt it wasn’t really anything new. It’s just that this time, we knew the people in it personally. Fights over stupid things happen all the time [I think we should come to expect that, especially considering where we live…]. Kids wanting to seem ‘hardcore’, repping their turfs, whatever. It’s not gonna end anytime soon.

Oh, and about how our school is racially divided… pft, hell yeah! Kind of reminds me of Mean Girls. But anyways…funny how you see it that way. I agree with most of your description of our cafeteria set-up. Except that most of the Mexican/Hispanic kids and black kids hang out with each other. And the Asian tables…hmm. I’m assuming I’m what you described as a “white-washed Chinese” then, though I hardly think of myself as ‘popular’. Ha, the “Smart Asians” are mainly Chinese because almost everyone speaks Chinese to each other? Mmm. There’s also those little sub-tables[?]; tables that aren’t really noticed or stand out [or filled with 7th graders, ick].

Yeah…we’re pretty grouped together.

By the way, happy birthday!

Well Disney does it again. Their new movie Prince of Persia has cast a white British actress, Gemma Arterton, to play the East Indian role of Princess Farrah. Why can’t they cast an east Indian actress. There lots of them in the US and in Britain with more credits on their resumes than this actress.
